June 2018 Message from the HGCAA President – John Helweg

As usual, we had a great meeting in May full of industry information. I’d like to thank Anixter North (formerly Tri-Ed) for hosting us and providing great food. Please remember, our associate members support us, so please support them.

We discussed some of the high points of the Sunset Advisory Commission’s report regarding DPS and the Private Security Board. I’m not happy with their recommendations and I hope that we can prevent any of them coming to fruition legislatively.

This is serious stuff that can greatly affect how our industry progresses in the future. I truly hope you guys are paying attention and will be ready to rally next year when the legislative session kicks off. Simple phone calls can make a big difference in a representative’s vote. They are not security experts, we are! they need our input to make informed decisions. Don’t be shy, for many of us this is our livelihood and retirement plans.

We presented this years HGCAA First Responders Scholarship recipient, Hieu Nguyen, with a well deserved check. His whole family was present to support him. He read his essay and shared his gratitude and appreciation to us. I’d like to thank all the advertisers in our monthly newsletter that purchase ads this year. Their ads have fully funded the scholarship program for the past two years. Please take a moment to thank them for supporting us and our scholarship goals.

Our guest speaker was Aaron Thomas with DMP. He was supposed to give the second half of his How to Sell to Millennials presentation, however we ran out of time. Each month our meetings are so packed with relevant industry information that we could easily be there for a couple of hours. If you’re not coming to the meetings, you’re missing out on CEU’s, great speakers and lots of inside information.

Our upcoming meeting is June 14th at ADI Pinemont and our guest speaker will be Steven Beers with the Growth Coach, Business & Sales Coaching.

See y’all soon,

John C. Helweg

June 2018 TBFAA UPDATE BY PRESIDENT – KELLY RYAN

Even though summer hasn’t officially started, it sure is hot outside! The same can be said about the upcoming 2019 Texas legislative session. While many have reviewed the Sunset Commission’s initial recommendations for the Department of Public Safety and the Private Security Board, we need to make sure that all association members are aware of the recommendations. Although the final recommendations have not yet been released, once they are, there will be bills filed that will have an impact on the alarm industry in Texas.

Now is the time to “get the word out” about the possible changes resulting from the Sunset Commission. The TBFAA will be going to the local associations during July and August to gather input and support from members. While there are items in the recommendations that we can support, we oppose reducing the PSB to an “advisory committee”. We also oppose the deregulation of salespeople, participating owners & shareholders, and managers; and while we support a more efficient licensing process, we want to keep alarm technicians affiliated with their employer.

For those keeping-up with the Sunset Commission recommendations, I applaud your effort and appreciate your help! For those that aren’t keeping-up with the recommendations, I ask you to get involved! If we are going to have anything to say about the future of security licensing in Texas, we must act together with the same message.

Now is also the time to make your reservations for the TBFAA 2018 Convention & Trade Show in Austin. The final recommendations from the Sunset Commission should be released just before our convention, and I’m certain it will be a hot topic! The convention is October 11 th thru the 12 th with golf on the 10 th . Make your plans to attend today.

For more information on the TBFAA 2018 Convention & Trade Show, please visit tbfaa.org. For more information on the Sunset Commission, please visit sunset.texas.gov, and to reach the TBFAA, please email president@tbfaa.org.

Sincerely,

Kelly Ryan
